The United States Department of Labor is a cabinet-level department in the executive branch of the U.S. federal government headed by the U.S. Secretary of Labor as appointed by the President of the United States with the consent of the U.S. Senate. In 1903, it was reassigned as a bureau of the newly-created cabinet-level Department of Commerce and Labor. Finally, in 1913, President William Howard Taft signed a law establishing the Department of Labor and the Department of Commerce as separate cabinet-level agencies as they remain today. On March 5, 1913, President Woodrow Wilson appointed William B. Wilson as the first Secretary of Labor. In October 1919, the International Labour Organization chose Secretary Wilson to chair its first meeting, even though the United States had not yet become a member nation. On March 4, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt appointed Frances Perkins to be Secretary of Labor. As the first female cabinet member, Perkins served for 12 years, becoming the longest-serving Secretary of Labor. Following the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the Department of Labor made the government’s first concerted effort to promote racial diversity in the hiring practices of labor unions. In 1969, Secretary of Labor George P. Shultz imposed the Philadelphia Plan requiring Pennsylvania construction unions, which had previously refused to accept black members, to admit a certain number of blacks by an enforced deadline. The move marked the first imposition of racial quotas by the U.S. federal government.

Despite how many people love it, there are a lot of people who dislike Texas and the pride Texans have for it. Texas fought for independence from a country much larger than itself, and then chose to become a part of the United States, while still reserving the right to secede. Many people do not take into accord the reasons why Texans are so proud. Perhaps the most famous Texans are men who weren’t even born in the state. David â€Å"Davy† Crockett won himself the nickname â€Å"King of the Wild Frontier† after many adventures and fighting many battles. The first shot fired at the Battle of the Alamo was by Davy Crockett, which caused the first blood to fall. It was reported that Davy Crockett hit his target at least 300 feet away. After the Texan soldiers had been destroyed, Santa Anna sent in his men to find the leaders of the Texans. They found David Crockett amidst a room full of dead Me xican soldiers (Kubiak 91). Victorian England in the opening of Oliver Twist Essay During Charles Dickens life he wrote many books, although they are different, but they reflect each other in many ways. I believe the biggest similarity in his collection of books is with Oliver Twist a story of a young boy who lives in an orphanage and Great Expectations which is a story of a young orphan named Phillip Pirrip, or Pip as he is more commonly known.  Both books are semi-autobiographical as they hint upon Dickens life as he grew up in a workhouse and was horrified by the social conditions of Victorian Britain. He used his work to help reform the class system. Few among the social classes recognised or cared about the conditions suffered by children in the workhouses. Some children turned to crime or, worse, died of starvation. Dickens had gone through the anguish of being pulled out of school and put to work in a shoe-polish factory. His father had been sent to a well known debtors prison called Marshalsea and there was no money for Dickens education. To his embarrassment, Dickens was moved to a window at the front of the factory for bystanders to see him as he glued labels on to tubs of shoe polish. The encounter that would leave a lifelong mark on him and played a major part in his inspiration for writing Oliver Twist. Oliver Twist, which was serialised monthly between 1837 and 1839, caused a sensation when it highlighted the troubles of the deprived young and their often horrendous experiences in the foul workhouses, and it begins with a narrator instantly saying things like which I need not trouble myself to repeat and for a long time after it was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all. This is showing that Oliver is immediately unimportant to everyone and this is shown especially well when Olivers mum has just given birth to him and the line reads the surgeon deposited it in her arms. I think the choice of words are very good here because the use of the word deposited shows the baby is not very well handled and the choice of the word it shows that the baby isnt considered important because she didnt say him or her. Olivers mum looks up and instantly talks about dying and straight away the surgeon says oh, you must not talk about dying yet with fears of being left with the baby, and while the mother has been giving birth the nurse has been drinking in the corner to an evident satisfaction and just after the mother dies the surgeon says dont send up for me if the baby cries, nurse and with great deliberation he adds Its likely it will be troublesome, give it a little gruel if it is. This shows that the surgeon is only bothered about his own job and his own happiness, we also have the repetition of it again. After Olivers mum dies he is immediately branded as the poorest of the poor based on his mums clothes and the fact that she wasnt married so he was dressed in old yellow calico robes, badged and ticketed after the surgeon says ahh the old story, no wedding ring. This shows that he thinks he has got her figured out just by the fact that she has no wedding ring, even though the list is endless as to why she might not be married. Mr Bumble also gets to wear a special cocked hat that is his pride and joy the hat has three tiers, which I believe represent the class system in place in the Victorian era, Lower class, Middle class, and Upper class. I think this is ironic that Mr Bumble treasures it because he isnt that far up in the class system.

According to a study, in around six investment banks in the US the remuneration subscribed to the executives was nearly 2% of the total compensation on an annual basis, which was much lower from the remuneration provided to executives in the European countries which was ranging from 20 to 35%. Consequently, most of the European countries were in support and adapted the framework of corporate governance relating to the concern of remuneration aspect. The concept of surpassing payment of executives has also been paid greater attention to. . In this regard, it can be observed that the issues relating to financial crisis are specified to the corporate governance relating to the separation of position of Chairman along with the CEO, as the requirements of both the personnel are quite similar in issues relating to remuneration (The World Bank Group, 2011). Diana, Princess of Wales, was the first royal family member to openly work with and support AIDS victims. "I touch people, I think everyone needs that,"stated Diana when discussing about how she freely hugs and touches AIDS patients and people who are HIV-positive. In 1989, Diana made one of her first public visits to an AIDS facility in England.Diana started her work with AIDS during a very hard time in her life. Even though Diana could have quit her charitable works after her divorce, she embraced them with a renewed passion. Diana's support for AIDS victims and sufferers came a crucial time when tabloids and her royal family didnt fully approve of her works.Diana became a favorite around normal, ev eryday people because she made them feel loved. Diana thought it was normal to touch and have conversations with AIDS patients when others wouldnt go near them. College Tuition Essay

College as we all know is very pricey from the cost of tuition all the way to the text books and fee’s, but the question I’m sure everyone including myself would like to know is why? And where all the money that we pay is actually going. College is what everyone knows as furthering there education or it’s a way to get a better paying job. One of the very first things people look at when applying for a college the is the tuition. How much is this school going to cost me. The cost of college tuition has changed a lot over the years. who knows what it will be in the next five ten years. But as for right now its expensive enough. With there being so many different colleges across the U. S. There should be one universal cost for all the four year colleges and one for the two year colleges instead of having one college cost thousands of dollars more then the other ones. I am in my second year of college at the community college of Denver, and granite it’s one of the cheaper schools I still think that the cost is outrages. We go to college to better our lives to get more training and education. So we can get that better paying job. Its not easy to do and not every one can do it. But is spending all this money really helping us better our lives or is it making life harder and more stressful? Most people cant pay the full tuition up front so they look at there options. Taking out a loan, or getting on a payment plan. If you decided to take out a loan that’s great you don’t have to worry bout money right now its taken care of. What happens later on down the road when your out of school finally and still broke but this time your in more debt then you know how to handle. Is it necessary to have the cost of tuition so high that a lot of people cant afford it, are school boards or school officials trying to put us in debt? It’s hard enough to get out of debt and when your there the money just keeps adding up. Tuition is different for every school and I’m sure there is a hand full of people if not more that have taken out loans to help pay for there way through school. Even after you pay your tuition you still have text books and other fees that are totally separate from what you already paid. Is attending college really helping us better ourselves or is it just helping us dig ourselves in to places like debt that are hard to get out of? College is expensive for multiple reasons. It may seem like your paying all this money for nothing but in all reality your not. The money you pay goes towards keeping the campus clean and running. Your paying so much so they can hire the bestinstructors. So they can to teach you all they can for what you have paid. You pay the money might as well get all you can out of it. Those are the two main reason to why you pay so much in tuition is to keep things running. The money also buys computers for labs and materials you might need minus your text books. There is maybe a handful of things that you can think of that maybe our money that we pay for tuition goes towards. It still feels like we pay more then they need us to. Every class has its own requirements. Most classes require you to purchase a text book that you may or may not use during the semester. You go to buy the book and you see the price and it isn’t cheap not even the used ones are all that cheap. Why have us pay so much in tuition if we still have to purchase books and other things. The cost of books aren’t cheap. Why cant there be class sets. Were we check them out and in order to receive a grade for that class at the end of the semester you have to check your book back in. not everybody wants to buy a book they will use once. I personally think that with all the money we give the school for tuition they could at least supply the books and materials needed. Isn’t there a better way then having us as students spend more money then necessary. We just want to further our education not be put in debt or tight money situations. The more you pay the better education and training your going to get, because the board of educators can afford to hire better educators. There are lots of colleges around the united states, and every one has a different tuition price. As well as different fields that they can help teach you more about or train you in. for an example metro is known for the school of business. Most schools have one specialty program that A. is always really pricey and B.  makes sure you get where you would need to be when you get that college degree. They are pretty much saying you get what you pay for. Why cant there just be a universal tuition? What is the pint in having in state and out of state prices? The cost of college tuition and the price of text books most likely wont be going down anytime soon. But now you have more of a back ground as to why you pay so much and to where all your money is actually going. I started out this paper thinking that the cost of tuition was way to high and I can honestly say that I still think that even after my research.
